Religion and power

Before this lesson, I had assumed that race was purely colored based rather than features or where someone has come from. Yet, by examining the videos and readings, race was ultimately created to ensure the white and wealthy were able to stay onto of the social ladder and to have justification for racism and slavery. Examing the Chapter “ Power” by Kendi I was able to reflect on my personal experiences upon entering an all-white school and being a minority. I could reflect on how differently white students were treated compared to colored students and the lack of colored teachers. I can also reflect on when I was stabbed by a white peer but I was to blame and punished when I did nothing. You can see who has power and who doesn't. When my family reported it, the teacher claimed they were not racist. as we look at Nye’s work it matches to how my teacher claimed they were not racist but through their action showed otherwise. yet, it was not just the teacher but rather the environment we were in. if we were in a more diverse school, maybe the teacher's actions would have been different.
